Allan Coyle
About the Artist

Allan Coyle was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1964. He graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in art and design from the renowned Glasgow School of Art.  Deciding to further his studies he obtained another degree in social studies majoring in art history from Strathclyde University in 1994.

Drawing inspiration from the French Impressionists and the Scottish Colorist movement of the early 20th century, Allan works exclusively in soft pastel.  He feels this medium empowers him to represent the exhilarating beauty and haunting atmosphere prevalent in the rugged terrain and seascape of his homeland.

The artist has exhibited in galleries throughout Scotland and was selected to exhibit as part of the prestigious 3D2D art show which is an integral part of the world famous Edinburgh International Art Festival held annually each August in Scotland’s national capital.

During the 1990s Allan taught painting classes to both adults and children as part of Glasgow City Council’s community arts program. Recently Allan's work has been accepted in national juried exhibitions in the U.S.

Allan Coyle strives to illustrate the beauty of Scotland in a way that differs from the popularly conceived images of tartan and bagpipes.  Vibrant colors and broad strokes reward the viewer with a deeper vision of a country whose wild ruggedness has caught the imagination of the world.

Allan is a professional artist full-time. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife Loralei, and daughter Kelly.
